Area 51 sits in the Nevada desert on Groom Lake. It became the most famous secret site in the field. Bob Lazar said he worked at a hidden facility called S-4, beside Papoose dry lake, 10 to 15 miles south of Groom Lake. His job, he said, was to reverse-engineer flying saucers. On 22 March 1989 he took his wife Tracy, Gene Huff and John Lear out on the Groom Lake road. Huff remembered a bright light that jumped, danced and hovered above the mountains. Benjamin Radford later wrote that Lazar's claims pushed Area 51 into public awareness. A 2019 Joe Rogan episode inspired the Storm Area 51 event.
