# FANTASY OF "FLYING DISC" IS EXPLAINED HERE

## Young Democratic Started In County

Members of the executive committee and the central committee of the Otter County Democrat's office at the courthouse Monday afternoon to organize a Young Democrat's Organization for Otter County. The nucleus of the organization, the selection of the officers, was accomplished by the parent organization, and are as follows:

A membership drive, context, social activities, and other functions are planned for the new organization, Mr. Pickett said. The state conference of Young Democrats will be held in Albuquerque August 18.

## M. P. Killed By Accidental Shot

## Cloudcroft Host To Golf Tourney

Local talent at Cloudcourt will be out behind John Parker in the hope of defending their home course at the Lodge against all cameras in the annual tournament which opens July 17.

Playing on the famous, highest in the world golf course, the qualifiers will conclude play on Thursday, July 17, and tournament play will begin.

Many unknown golfers are drifting in this week rehearsing for the tournament with some old favorites on hand, for practice rounds.

Fortune, Arlanda, will have about a half-down golfers on hand and Odessa, Trina, has about the same number of entries. El Paso will wind the largest and strongest run-inest, it has stated.

## AAF Weather Experts Forecast For V-2 Firings

The weather station is within other stations in that the technicians at While Banda are primarily interested in meteorological conditions of the upper air regions rather than weather close to the earth's surface which effect normal air traffic.

For this reason the weather technicians use the latest in radio equipment. Large'2,000 gram proprer balloons carry critical instruments to about 100,000 feet with ground radio receivers, direction-finding equipments, and surveillance radar units correlate weather conditions at extreme heights.

One of the major projects at White Sands in the series of captured German V-2 rocket flights in which leading aerialists of major research organizations, place various types of recording instruments in the warheads of the rockets in aerofoil efforts to solve some of the mysteries of the upper atmosphere.

The importance of weather forturing for three rocket firings is vital to the success of the Y-2 program.

Four complete forecasts ranging from T2 to 4 hours before each Y-2 firing are required to ensure the success of the program. The forecasts have the following purpose: The 72-hour forecast is for the necessary planning and setup.

## News Men Watch Army Radar Crew Launch "Disc"

Local "flying diaries", and possibly those throughout the nation, summered down to balloon-placed observation radar larger known from the Alamogordo Army Air Base and related bases throughout the nation.

The same group observed the flight of the balloons and trailing observation reflectors for apsurus initially one hour after the balloon burst over the foothills of the Nicaraguan Mountains, southeast of Alamogordo, and the conquest descent of the device, known by rumor as the "flying disc" of this area, until it grounded about 30 feet from highway 78 southeast of Alamogordo.

In flint the reflections and their towing balloons climbed by stages in the mid-day but air currents and at times oscillated and appeared to the eye-sight as of various shapes with the reflections iming their identity as they changed.

The losing balloons, however, remained identified throughout the seven to ten-mile flight and were observed by motor-operated tracking sighta, field-glass and radar contact with the reflections.

Major Pritchard, who issued the invitation to the press group to visit and view the widely-discussed and reported incident of the corner reflector device, explained the object was study and training of officers and enlisted men of the army in observing and tracking of objects slower than airplanes by eye and radar device.

The corner reflections being periodically released for this purpose, he explained, and had been for the past fifteen months from this local headquarters of the AMC under the Walton Laboratories group, who have headquarters at Red Bank, New Jersey.

Major Pritchard and his fellow officers, Major C. M. Mangum, Captain L. H. Dryad and I. B. W. Seikel, he explained, "that not realized that our balloon and corner reflector radar experimental device was in any way related to the widely-documented flying disc"

## Seventy Youngsters Out For Classes

Several youth members of Alameda do responded to the call for free swimming lessons this week to make this the most popular of summer recreational sports under the school-community center sponsored activities.

The battallion league play continued last and fast with the Lions trimming the Rotary juniors 15 to 13 and the Alamo lovers dropping their game with the junior Mets' store nine, 10 to 7. Three 4 teams play every Monday night.

munity's Center Friday evening with an orchestra lined up for the danc-

## Race Fans May See Top Quarter Nags In Matches Sunday

## Quimby Looks Over Workshop Systems To Get Start Here

Dr. Neal P. Quimby, supervisor

of the New Mexico School for

Blind, left Sunday for eastern

persons in Baltimore. Mr. He will

also visit Philadelphia, Pittsburgh

and other cities making observations

of workshops there.

Dr Quimby is making his career with the view of designing a workshop for blind to be built in Alameda, California. His observations will be used in making recommendations to architects in designing the building, and in writing us teaching methods and providing equipment for the workshop here.

The regents of the N. M. School for Blind have negotiated with A. O. and Fulton Robinson for five hats in Stock R. on Pennsylvania Ave. as a aide for the workshop. The institution will be a branch of the N. M. School for Blind, and will be built and equipped at an estimated annual cost of $80,000.

Blind persons to be trained in the workplace here, which is expected to be completed either this year or early next year, will number less and will be entitled clients; the state Department of Health Welfare, or of any other state or national agency giving assistance to blind persons. Trainees of the Veterans Administration may receive training here.

At the present time, over 230 blind adults in the state are receiving assistance from the State Department of Public Welfare, on the basis of need. Those persons will be given an opportunity to make themselves well maintaining in spite of or in part, through training in the workings.

In addition to their, Dr. Quinlan has answered, from information gathered by the School, nine veterans of the last war are now blind and in need of training, and the strength of some 20 to more than threatened because of prison camp disease.
