This FAA document, labeled AAL-5 and dated February 4, 1987, gives selected portions of the air traffic control transcripts for Japan Air Lines Flight 1628 on November 18, 1986 (UTC). It records the crew reporting unidentified traffic with navigation and strobe lights near Fort Yukon and Fairbanks. Anchorage Center, Fairbanks approach and military ROCC radar discuss intermittent primary returns. A United flight and a military C-130 are brought in to look, and neither sees any other aircraft.

Military radar advises they are picking up intennittent primary target behind you in-trail, in-trail I say again. 0240:51 Rro::: Ah-I'm gonna talk to my other radar man here - has gotta, he's got sane other equip:nent watching this aircraft. 0240:54 Dl5 Okay. 0240: 13 R15 Roger sir. Would you (JAL 1628) like our military to scramble an the traffic? 0240:17 JL1628 Negative, negative. 0242:04 JL1628 0242:09 Rl5 Anchorage Center. Japan Air sixteen twenty eight. Confinn direct to Talkeetna, three one zero. Japan Air sixteen twenty eight heavy; affirmative. Direct Talkeetna and descend at pilot's discretion, maintain flight level ~ five zero.
