This U.S. Department of State cable from the American Embassy in Ashgabat, dated November 12, 2004, describes a November 5 meeting between embassy officials and the Union of Ufologists of Turkmenabat. The group started out studying life on other planets and became a trusted NGO partner. It helps businesses and NGOs register, has distributed humanitarian aid and is seeking USAID grants, including one for a newsletter. Its president said there had been no confirmed UFO sightings in Turkmenistan.

From the source:Release of 2026-05-08 Incident: 11/5/04, Turkmenistan. UFOlogists of Turkmenistan has gained a positive reputation as a reliable partner for the United States in Turkmenistan to the bemusement of the cable’s author in the build up of civil society organizations within the country. The reputation has become earned because everyone in Turkmenistan, apparently, “is interested in UFOs.”
