iiiicked on Navy
Radar Screen
MEMPHIS, Tenn., July 13 CUP) .
The Navy studied a report ·today
•:from t wo pilots and an electronics
instructor who claimed to have
tracked a flying saucer or some
strange craft on a radar screen
for eight miles.
Both fliers reported seeing a
shiny round object whizzing pa.st
their training planes, about 10
miles northeast of Osceola, Ark.,
last night.
Electronics technician G. D.
Wehner, who wa-s flying with en•i
li9ted pilot R. E. Moore, said he
"caught it on the radar scope. It
was helmet-shaped. The outline
of the edges were all right, bit
lare from the center of it p •
ented getting a better look."
flrst Thought Jet
"At first we thought it• was a
jet plane distor ted by glare off
the aluminum b~dY," said Lt.
(j ,g . ) J. w. Martm, the second
pilot.
"When I first spotted the saucer
it was about two miles off and
appea.red to be a round ball. It
was in sight for about three min-
utes and at _one time we were
within one mlle of it." •
Moore said, "It was on our left
and traveled across in front of us
and disappeared ln the distance
to our 1·ight. I think it would be
about 25 to 45 feet across and
about seven feet high.
"The thing looked like a World
War I helmet seen from t he side.
or 11, shiny &'hallow bowl turned
upside down. We wanted to fol
low it, but our training ships
couldn't keep up with the saucer,
or whatever it was."
The pilots,. based .at t he Milling.
t on n aval all' station n ear he1·e,
estimated the object was Hying at
11n alt(tucle of 8.000 feet nt a speed
of 200 miles per houl'.
