This FBI file, 62-HQ-83894 Sub A, collects newspaper clippings on flying saucers that the Bureau filed between 1947 and 1960. They include July 1947 reports of discs over Portland, Idaho, Seattle and Washington, and a Grand Blanc, Michigan pizza maker's complaint about his moon photograph. There are also clippings on Reinhold Schmidt's November 1957 space ship claim at Kearney, Nebraska, the Coast Guard cutter Sebago radar sighting, Carl Jung's 1958 remarks, and Captain Peter Killian's 1959 airliner sighting.

"There is a very high deg-ree of probability that flying saucers are real objects, and a 60 per cent probability that they are alien vehicles," Wilbert B. Smith. scientist appointed to supervise the new saucer sighting station, told reporters. He said the federal transport department, in which he has charge of the telecommunications broadcast and measurement sec tion, receives constant reports of sighting of flying saucers. The total number; he said, is classi fied as restricted information. "The optical illusion explana tion is lovely," he said, "but in every sighting t here is always some factor that precludes this explanation. We have decided ·to try to learn just what they are." Canada's sighting station will be at Shirley bay, OD the Ottawa river 10 miles west of here. Smith said any one Iocaion in Canada is sure to have at least one saucer sighting a year.
