This FBI file, 62-HQ-83894 Sub A, collects newspaper clippings on flying saucers that the Bureau filed between 1947 and 1960. They include July 1947 reports of discs over Portland, Idaho, Seattle and Washington, and a Grand Blanc, Michigan pizza maker's complaint about his moon photograph. There are also clippings on Reinhold Schmidt's November 1957 space ship claim at Kearney, Nebraska, the Coast Guard cutter Sebago radar sighting, Carl Jung's 1958 remarks, and Captain Peter Killian's 1959 airliner sighting.

As rumors persisted (and were denied) that the "flying sau
cers" are rndio controlled rocket or jet planes being tested se
cretly, Washington got in the act today with a report from two
District women of strange goings-on overhead.
Meanwhile, assorted scientists~·--- ---- ------
came up with widely varying theo•
ries as to .what-if anything-the
heavenJy wanderers may be.

said people. have the atomic jitters.

a re not astronomical phenomena.

before their eyes."
But unnamed scientists quoted by
Science Service expressed doubt
that a purely opt ical illusion would
make people think they were see
ing flying disks. Science Service
also pointed out tha t some o.f t he ·,
saucers have been r eported by "re
liable observers accustomed to look
ing at the sky."'

the first a uth enticated reportt of
flying saucers within t he city lim
its of Washington was made by
two startled matrons.
The ladies spotted the , things
night beiore last, but were under
standably reluctant to report it at
once.
"I know what you'll t hink," the
youngee one said in an exclusive
interview with The News, ''but
mother saw them, too, and sh e
~ocsn't drink.
"We were shopping on Minni!•
sota-ave ne at about 7 Thul·srlay
night," she said, "when I heard a
1noise like a jet-propelled plane. I1
looked up and saw these things go
ing thru the air. There were three
of them, shaped like dishes and go
