This section of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's flying saucer file 62-HQ-83894 holds FBI correspondence from 1957 to 1966. It includes a November 1957 memo saying Air Force Intelligence found the post-Sputnik sightings nonauthentic, and a Havana report of a hat-shaped disc over Matahambre, Cuba. It also has inquiries into Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation, a Torrington, Connecticut sighting referral, and replies to members of the public. The replies say UFOs are not within FBI jurisdiction and refer writers to the Air Force.

By letter 9- 3-47 from Headquarters Air Defense Command addressed to Commanding Generals of the various Air Forces it was noted original intent of Ai r Force was that Ai r Force would interview responsible ob servers and Bureau would i nvesti gate inci dents of so - called discs found on ground . Letter stated services of the FBI were enlisted in order to r e lieve the numbered Air Forces of the task of tracking down all the many instances whi ch turned out to be "trash can covers , toilet seats and what not . " As result, fuJreau Bulletin Number 57 of 10/1L47 instructed "all future reports connected with f lying di scs should be referred to the Air Forces and no i nvestigative action should be taken by Bureau Agents." Letter of 9 - 27 - 47 advi sed Air Force that personnel and time of FBI could not be dis sipated in this manner (62- 83894- 121) . SAC Letter Number 38 advised that from reliable source it ad been e ine t e USSR had been experimenting for four years on unknown type of flying disc . SAC Letter listed for field data desired by Air Force in connection with reports of sighting of f lying saucers .
