This section of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's flying saucer file 62-HQ-83894 holds FBI correspondence from 1957 to 1966. It includes a November 1957 memo saying Air Force Intelligence found the post-Sputnik sightings nonauthentic, and a Havana report of a hat-shaped disc over Matahambre, Cuba. It also has inquiries into Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation, a Torrington, Connecticut sighting referral, and replies to members of the public. The replies say UFOs are not within FBI jurisdiction and refer writers to the Air Force.

At this time there appears to be no necessit y for
additional instructions for the field or insertion in the FBI
Handbook or Manuals relative to fl y ing saucers .
Memorandwn 10/2/61 pointed out that our polic y
concerning unidentified flying objects is to conduct no
investigation but immediatel y refer facts to the Ai r Force
(Bu reau Bulletin Numbe r 57, 10/1/4?) ; that SAO Letter Number
38, J/25/49, r eiterated this polic y and set out data desired
by Air Force to be obtained when complaint recei ved; that SAO
Letter Number 83?. 8/29/52, again pointed out ou r polic y; that
Ai r Fo rce on 11/12/5? assur ed that Bur eau woul d be adv ised if
any de velopments in this field of inter est to us; and that
there appeared to be no necessit y for f u rthe r instructions to
field or inser tion in agents ' Handbook or Manual of Instructions
of our policy r elating to fl y ing saucers .
Dur ing the past 12 months onl y one complaint regar d ing
fl y ing saucers has been recei ved. The facts in this complaint
wer e i mmediatel y r ef erred to t he Air Fo rce .
ACTION:
For your information. The r e appears to be no necessit y
for additional instructions fo r the field or insertion in the
FBI Handbook or Manuals relat i ve to f l }!_ing saucers . This matter
will again be rev i ewed on or about 10/1/63 .
