This is Section 5 of the FBI's flying disk file 62-HQ-83894, made up of 1949 and 1950 correspondence. Most of it covers a letter sent to Walter Winchell by Peter Camerlon Jones, who said he saw a silver top-shaped object near Los Angeles in 1947. The Los Angeles office could not find him, and the Bureau suggested the letter was a prank. The section also holds a Navy intelligence report on 6 or 7 discs seen over southern Oregon on 27 May 1949, plus several letters from citizens.

# Office Memorandum . UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO : THE DIRECTOR FROM : D. M. Ladd DATE: July 12, 1949 SUBJECT: FLYING SAUCERS I took a call from Ernest Cuneo by reference from your office. He referred to his call of last Saturday relative to a letter Mr. Winchell received from a man in Los Angeles concerning flying saucers. He stated that Winchell wanted to do a column on this letter if the Bureau had no objection. I told him that whatever he did with reference to writing the story concerning this letter was entirely up to him and would in no way affect anything the Bureau was doing. I suggested that he might desire to check with the Air Corps inasmuch as the handling of flying saucers was a matter of primary interest to them. He stated, "To hell with the Air Force.
