This Federal Bureau of Investigation file section (62-HQ-83894, Section 4) collects 1947 to 1949 correspondence on flying discs. It includes Portland police officers' accounts of a silvery object over the city on September 11, 1947, an Alaska pilot's July 1947 sighting near Bethel, citizen letters answered by J. Edgar Hoover, and a 1948 Air Defense Command directive on disc investigations. The FBI replied that it was conducting no flying disc investigations. Later items concern William Albert Rhodes's disc photographs and a Los Angeles letter judged a probable prank.

This file is partially posted on FBI vault with more redactions and some pages missing. Included here is the complete case file with several newly declassified pages and only minor redactions.

JOHNSON, that his paper had been contacted by Lt. Col. STANLEY JACOBS, Intelligence Officer, Castle Air Force Base, Merced, California, re.Lative to any reports that the newspaper might have received concerning "fiying disks" in the Merced vicinity. Mr. HODELL stated a c.Lose friend of his, one WILLI.All H ~, 12-A Langdon Villa, Merced, tad advised him that he had obse~A=HO'l" strange object, and as he is in the Air Cc,rps Reserve, he reported same to the Intelligence Officer at Castle Field. On the same date Mr. GEORGE BREMER, Detachment Commander, Office of Special Investigations, Castle Air Force Base, Yerced, California, advised SA MARLIN W. JOHNSON that he bad heard tt.t an individual bad reported s eeing a '1flyi.ng disk" to the Intelligence Office at the Base but that the Intelligence Officer had not furnished the information to him. Mr. BREHER later on the same date contacted SA JOHNSON arxl exhibited a letter written by STANIEY F . JACOBS, Lt. Col., USAF, Adjutant (Int elligence Officer) to Commanding General, Air Material Command, Wright-Patterson AFB, Wright Field, Ohio. This letter contained a statement given by Mr. WILLIAM H. PARROTT 11'hioh read as follows, 11 I bad occasion to step from my home, located approximately one mile west of the town of Merced, on the night of April 4, 1949, at approximately 2220. My attention was diverted to a clicking noise of considerable intensity. I stopped on the sidewalk about 20 feet from the front steps am recognized the source of this clicking to be in the sky in an area about 4U degrees from the sur face of the earth in an easterly direction. The sky cend1.tion was 200<Xl thin broken with 12 miles visibility and surface winds were reported as north nine M.P.H. at Castle Air Force weather station. My home is a pproximately seven miles south of Castle Air Force Base and in an area somewhat sheltered from surface winds,and no appreciable surface wind was apparent at the time the aural observation was made. After about ten seconds of lo oking into the area described previously as being the source of this sound, an object was observed blanking out stars in describing a flight path in a west or northwesterly direction. Only one object was apparent, its shape can be described as only a solid mass. Its size can be estimated as four or f ive feet in diameter in keeping with an estimated altitude of con siderably less than 1000 (one tbeusand) feet.
