Reference is made to your letter dated august 11, 1947 in the above captioned
matter.
Sheriff FRED Bl\U, t:c Henry County, ,loodstock, Illinois, advi sed that he had
received no reports of f]ying discs in the communit y of Lily Lake , Illinois .
He further stated that he had no record or knowledge of RICHARD F. SHAVER of
Lily Lake .
Deputy Sheriff FR.Af1K KELIER, Li~ Iake, Illinois , advised that he was per
sonally acquainted with RICf!A..~VERJ whom he described as a successful Nwriter of mystery stories . He said he had no information to the effect that
SHAVER was mentally unsound and he believed him to be a substantial citizen. 0:::
:l!'s . R. UurnES, Lily lake Realty Company, advised she had sol d property to
ST11\VER on two occasions and was well acquainted with SI-Itt.VER and his wife .
She knew of no derogatory information concerning him.
RICHARD SHARPTTHA~ was inter viewed at Lily lake > Illinois and advised that
he was the featured wr iter of mystery s t ories f Q.J:..!f1tmazing 11 magazine, which
magazine is edited by .EAYJ .mf:r.I'1iJJ...l!.~ of t ~ f -'Davis .Publishing Company,
Chicago, Illinois . SP.AVER at the outset stated that P.1:>.L,JER had told him thy
FBI would contact him r egar dine flying discs . 1 ..,_ -.. ~ ,
$¥.AVER indicated that the telegram received by the i1ar Depa.rt~ent, r eferred
to in r eferenced letter, was probably sent by one of his readers, unknovm to
him. I~ said that he ,rrote mystery stories based on his firm conviction that
under the earth are var ious caverns formerly inhabited by a super race , who
have since fled to other planet s . This region of caverns he calls Lemuria .
~ stated he believes there is valuabl e machinery and other r esources i n these
caver ns . He therefore explained flying discs , which he calls "space ships ",
as the mode of travel of the Ieourians coming f rom other planet s to reclaim
the valuable nachinery. &.{A.VER indicated that his theories had aroused a
wide following among readers of 11Amazing11 magazine . / , .
SHA iER exhibited an article from an edition of the 11 Chicago Times" for sunta:"F
/"ugust B, 1947. The article stated that on June 24, 1947, on Murray Island,
off the .Tashington Coast, there had occurred a mysterious explosion which was
believed to have been caused by a guided missile or rocket . It furthefi ~ t ed
