This 1948 file from U.S. Air Force headquarters holds correspondence on reporting "flying discs." It includes a February 1948 policy directing all sightings to Air Materiel Command for Project SIGN, along with a rejected proposal to keep fighter aircraft on continuous alert. It also contains forwarded reports: an FBI account of a phosphorescent round object seen at Hobson, Ohio, on 8 May 1948, and objects seen falling near Bakersfield, California, in March 1948.
