This is a preliminary transcript of Part I of the Gemini 4 (GT-4) flight crew debriefing. The Spacecraft Operations Branch of NASA's Flight Crew Support Division prepared it on June 16, 1965, from recordings of the debriefing held aboard the USS Wasp on June 9, 1965. In it, astronauts McDivitt and White describe the mission from an operational viewpoint, covering countdown, powered flight, insertion, orbital operations, reentry, landing and recovery. According to the preface, visual sightings were left for a later part.

Were we BEF for the full time or were we in free drift? We were in free drift but this was near the sun when this thing came out . No , they always come out loud and clear when you ' re away f r om the sun , when you ' re looking away from the sun . Yes . I lmow it , but at that one time when you sai d, "There ' s the booster." , you were looking at the sun . Remember , I had turned around? They told us that they wanted us to be BEF and heads down when we opened up the hatch . That ' s where we were . I turned around to be BEF . We were BEF when we saw that thing .
