This is a preliminary transcript of Part I of the Gemini 4 (GT-4) flight crew debriefing. The Spacecraft Operations Branch of NASA's Flight Crew Support Division prepared it on June 16, 1965, from recordings of the debriefing held aboard the USS Wasp on June 9, 1965. In it, astronauts McDivitt and White describe the mission from an operational viewpoint, covering countdown, powered flight, insertion, orbital operations, reentry, landing and recovery. According to the preface, visual sightings were left for a later part.

I do believe that we need some type of handles on the outside of the spacecraft . Jim suggested one o~ the nose and in the cover on the R & R section up there . I thi nk this is an area that we cer tainly have a possibility of using . I certainly would have found it useful. I woul d still be a little h~sitant, though , o.f breaking the an- tenna . You wo'..lld want to be sure that this wouldn't be hroken during EVA . I think the feeling I had o'..lt there, again, was like holding onto an 8-foot tree . There wasn't any thing to hold onto. You definitely need some kind of hand- holds . The decision to leave the hatch open was one of the best decisions that we made . It provided me with a center of oper ations for my work.
