Correspondence Relating to Project Blue Book, 1955

U.S. Department of War · 1955 · 220 pages · text by OCR

This 1954 to 1955 file of U.S. Air Force Directorate of Intelligence correspondence gathers letters and memos about the Unidentified Flying Object Program. In one memo, the Air Force says an object that fell at Sylacauga, Alabama was identified as a meteorite at the Air Technical Intelligence Center. Donald Keyhoe questions the Office of Naval Research about the Navy's analysis of the Tremonton film, and the Navy says data are insufficient and it sees no danger. Most of the replies to the public enclose the Air Force UFO summary.

SUBJECT: Falling Object - Sardis Lake

TO: Intelligence Officer, U. S. Army Air Force, Washington, D. C.

1. On 8 December 1954 an object was found by local interests on Tract P-125, Sec. 1, T-7-S, R-5-W, Mississippi, and turned over to personnel of this District at the Sardis Dam Field Office, located approximately seven miles north of Batesville, Mississippi. The object is in fairly good shape and has a white parachute attached to it, a paper cover on it marked "Signal Corps, U. S. Army, Radiosonde AN/AMT-3, Serial No. 2295 (number blurred and somewhat doubtful), Order No. 11083-Phila - 47-77, Washington Institute of Technology, Inc." Stamped on the inside of the cover of this device are the letters S-C and appearing directly under those letters are the numerals 81.

2. This object is similar to another object which was observed to fall in the same vicinity on 8 June 1954 and which was later, upon direction, turned over to Personnel of the Greenville Air Base, Greenville, Mississippi. C., by letter of this office dated 6 October 1954, file LMKVE, on the subject "Fallen Object - Sardis Lake, Mississippi."

3. It is requested that this office be advised as to what disposition is desired to be made of the property referred to in paragraph 1 above.
