Project Blue Book Socorro file

Internet Archive · 168 pages · text by OCR

This Project Blue Book file on the Socorro, New Mexico sighting, held by the Internet Archive, collects Air Force records and 1964 press clippings. It covers policeman Lonnie Zamora's April 24, 1964 report of an egg-shaped object with four legs, the scorched brush and ground depressions, and Dr. J. Allen Hynek's investigation. An Air Force summary says soil and brush analysis found no radiation or propellant and the case stayed open. Later New Mexico reports were judged known objects or hoaxes.

only defendant of the fund. He of 16 trustees the union and eight ment. But, says be used "fraud, presentation and persuade the to approve loans

UNLIKE MOST pension funds, Central States money has been invested largely in real-estate loans. According to the grand jury, Hoffa and his associates worked this way:

Various of the seven others would represent themselves to prospective borrowers as being close to Hoffa. The indictment charges they would demand "fees, stock options and stock interests" as payment for using their influence with him.

—Hoffa, it is alleged, then "made false representations and misleading statements" about the loans to the trustees

once the loans were made, the indictment says the defendants diverted more than $1 million "for the personal use and benefit" of themselves.

and their professional advisers. As a trustee, he also allegedly "spoke out and voted in favor of the loans."

IN ONE CASE, according to the charge, Hoffa told the trustees that a North Miami, Fla., hospital which sought—and got a $2 million loan would be leased to Dade County and that the county would put up at least as much money as the pension fund. Both statements

were false, the grand jury said, and actually a "substantial portion of the loan was diverted to purposes other than construction.

In another instance, it charged, at least $100,000 was diverted to clear up Hoffa's personal involvement in Sun Valley, Inc., a Florida development he helped promote as a retirement center for aged teamsters.

Altogether, 14 specific loans involving $20 million in six states are cited in the indictment. Additional cases are expected to be brought during the trial.
