Project Blue Book Socorro file

The Black Vault · 167 pages · text by OCR

This Black Vault release compiles 1964 newspaper and wire service clippings plus a Project Blue Book summary on the Socorro, New Mexico sighting by policeman Lonnie Zamora on April 24, 1964, when an egg-shaped object left four depressions and burned brush. It covers J. Allen Hynek's site visit, APRO and NICAP comment, and related New Mexico reports at La Madera, Edgewood and Albuquerque. The Air Force summary reports that soil and brush analysis found no radiation or propellant, and the case remained open.

Emergency Program Goes to Congress

After Johnson Trip

Johnson, who made a five-state tour of the Appalachian area Friday, worked over the weekend with aides on the "must" legislation he planned to send to the Senate and House.

A PRICE TAG of $3 billion to $4 billion has been put on the program, but the White House said the total outlay could not be calculated accurately. It would cost $220 million in the coming fiscal year.

WASHINGTON, April 27. President Johnson sends to Congress today his emergency program for helping the poverty-stricken Appalachia region.

THE PRESIDENT told his news conference Saturday that his proposals would call for improved highways and communications. better flood control, better use of the region's coal, timber and land, and development of human resources.

# Soviets Battle to Save Fabled Ancient Samarkand

MOSCOW, April 27. Soviet engineers today expressed confidence of winning a "battle of nature" to save the fabled ancient city of Samarkind from a threatened flood by millions of tons of water.

Waters of the Zeravshan River strained against a natural dam caused by a massive landslide in the central Asian region. Collapse of the 800-foot-high barrier would send the water down the valley across the ring cotton and grape area where 500,000 people live.

MOSCOW RADIO said this morning, however, that engineers had nearly finished a "by-pass canal" around the dam, slowing the rise in pressure.

Dynamite is being put in toplace and the charges will be detonated Wednesday, forcing the river into a new bed and allowing the accumulated water to run off harmlessly, the radio said.

At that time, it said, "the danger of floods will be completely eliminated."

REPORTS FROM the dam said the water had been rising 15 inches an hour and had formed a 100-foot deep lake in three days. But Moscow radio said this morning the rate of increase had

SOVIET OFFICIALS hurriedly evacuated villagers near a bulging, earth slide-formed lake which threatened to flood an Uzbekistan valley and overflow into the legendary golden city of Samarkand (shaded area in UPI newsmap.). TASS, the Soviet news agency, said the quake cut nearby Darnvorz Mountain in two, dropping a mass of rock as high as an 80 story building into a nearby river. (UPI Telephoto.)
