The UAO Sightings at the
Is land of Ferna ndo Noronha
Fernando Noronha is another small
rocky island in th e South Atlantic Ocean
between the Brazili<ln coa st and the Afri-
can continent. Unlike Trindade, it is
placed a long the route of the U. S. guided
missiles fired from Cape Canaveral in
t he direction of Ascension Island. Be-
cause of this stra tegic position) the island
was selected two years ago as the place
for a U. S. guided mis sile and satellite
tracking station. Accordin g to the mili-
tary treaty between the two countries,
the instruments set up over the island
to track hi gh, fast· movin g objects-the
guidcd miss iles and satellites-were to
be operated by American crews and Bra-
zilian technicians working together. As
soon as the tracking station was built,
it was put into operation together with
the already existing tracking system net.
Recently onc of t he Brazilian techni-
cians workin g at the tracking station
arrived at Rio to see his famIly . He
sta yed here for a few weeks. He told
us a startling story. He said that the
first UAO sightings over Fernando No -
ronha occurred t he sa me day the station
had bcgut:! its operation s.
An ICBM had been fired from the
Atlantic Miss ile Ran ge in Florida) and
as it. roared up into the stratosphere and
fell b3ck to earth , the crews at Fernando
Noron ha were read y to record its f light.
Sudde nly a target was picked up on the
radar screens. It was the roc ke t a nd the
station started to track it. But a few
seconds later a nothe r "rocket" was spot-
ted moving along the sa me trajectory.
Something was wr ong. They had been
called to track onc rocket bu t the radars
had picked up two rockets. A rad io mes-
sage was immediate ly ::ient asking fo r '
an explanation. Th ere was no explana-
tIOn, was th e a nswer, for only one mis-
sile had been fired. The radar operators
said that the second target looked real,
too, but it W::l S "explained away " as a
rcfk:ction caused by an inversion layer.
The " ghos t rockets " continued to be
picked up, however, a lmost ev ery tim e
a guidcd mi ssile wa s being tracked by
t he station. Soon it became clear that
thos e [as t· moving objects chasing the
guided m issiles were real too. They were
sighted by every person at Fernando
Noron ha. Sometimes only one was spot -
ted, sometimes they came in p air s, so me-
t imes a wholc formation includin g th r ec
or four unknown s wa s sightecl . Some of
them follow ed the rocket they were
t r ack in g durin g the whole t r a cking se -
qucnce. But others ch~n g cd cours e and
went in another direc~ ion. And a few
even stopped for a ti m e over the Jsland.

they were UAOs-not gu ided missilcs _
Besides the UAO activity connecled
with thc gu idcd missile tests , UAOs
began to appea r over the Island at al-
most regular intervals-Has if t hey were
patrollin g the area," concluded our in -
formant. He also said that all those
sightings were classified, and that his
name eould not be used in connection
with the information if it was publishcd.
In the li ght of the information about
the UAO activities in the area of Fer-
nando Noronha, it is not difficult to guess
what th ey were doing over Trindade.
Taking into account all of the evalu a ted
data, it is evident that these UAOs are
spy-s hips. They are keeping every guidcd _
missile test range, satelli te launching
base, and t r acking station around this
worl d under close watch all the time.
When they detected signs of a ctivity on
Tr indade th ey started a n investigation to
discover what we were doing there . For
so me time, they probably suspected the
ne w base to be somehow connected with
our r ocket and satellile tests . As soon as
the obvious peaceful character of the
meteoro logical studies performed there
was established, the UAOs abandoned the
survey-to concentrate on more impor-
tant targets. Fernando Noronha is one
of these _targets. The UAOs a re still b e-
ing sighted there.
Thes e conclusio ns are based on the
facts-alJ of the facts rela ted with the
remark abl e sequence of military UAO
re;lOrts included in this review, You may
acccpt or r eject them. Yet, you c annot
deny the fact that t he evidence pr ese nted
is more than enough to prove that UAOs
are re al objec ts. And if you a re one of
those who accuse UAO researchers of
crelting the m ystery of the flying sau-
cers, believing what t hey want to believe
and rejecting a ll other possibilitie s, I ·

gation of t hese stra nge objects in t he
sky. If you ca nn ot meet his challenge ,
then you shall have to r evis e your ide;) :)
on the subject. In an in tervie w with th e
press, on February 28, 1958, he said the
words that will be used to close this
r eview. The y are:
"It is im possible to de ny any more the
existe nce of flying saucers at t he present
time. Regard in g the Trind ade photo-
gra phs, 1 sep. no rea son fo r disbelief,
neither to admit that th e photogra pher
would dare to take the ri sk of a public
expose of hi s fraud (if it wa s the case )
nor to think that rcpo:'ter Joao Martins-
an expert on the m atter and a. respon-
sible newspaperma n-woul d accept the
photographic evidence for publicatio n
without a previous examination to test
it s auth ent icity . And, to close the issue ,
the Navy Hi gh Command its elf released
an offic ia l nole confirmi ng the photos'
authenticily.
"The flying saucer is not a ghost from
a not her dimen sion , or a mystci-iollS dra -
gon. It is a fact confirmed by m :l terial
cvidenee. There are thousands of docu-
ments, photos , and s ighting reports dem-
onstrating its ex ist ence. For inslance
when I went to t he AF High Comma ;l ~ i
to discuss the fl yi ng sa ucers I c alled for
ten witnesses-military (A F officers) and
civilians- to r eport their evidence about
the presence of flying saucers in tilC
skies of Rio Gra:lde clo SuI and over
Gravatai AFB; some of the~l had seen
uFOs with the naked eye, others Wilh
high powered optic a l inst r UnlCl ,ls . For
more tha n two hours the phenomcllon
was present in the sky, impressin g the
selected audience: officers, e ngineers,
tec hn ici a ns, etc.

present emerg ency brou ght about by the
r elocation of headqu 3rters to Tucson
AriZOIl3. .
The main present objective, besides
th r. mov in g it self, is to gather another
working staff to handl e t he large corre-
spo:1c1 en ce. Thi s will take time, of cou r se,
a nd during the tim e that it will take to
acquaint myself w i ~h newsp a pers and
printing offices in the new loca ti on, spare
tim e will be at a pre m ium. Tucson will
present new problems, mainly those en-
tailin g commuting from the APRO office
to printing offices, etc,
There will be no Jul y 1r)GO issue of the
Bullclin because of t hi s movc, but the
Bulletin will either be issued at a later
date or coupled with a future issue. I
feel at present, however, tha t the Sep-
temb ~ r issue will be on sched_ule; at
least I since rely hope so. If not, I hop e
the members will try to understand.
Our next issue will ou tline the step· by-
step military rcconnaisance of the ear t h
which has b een carried out by the UAO
in the pa st 13 years, It will also dea l
with possibl e explanalion [or the diver-
gent types of VAO erews.
