This USAF Project Blue Book file, distributed by NICAP, covers the radar and visual sightings at Bentwaters and Lakenheath, England, on 13 and 14 August 1956. It contains the record card, Air Intelligence Information Reports, ATIC correspondence with Dr. J. Allen Hynek, and a retired controller's later letter to the University of Colorado describing an RAF interceptor being tailed. The Air Force attributed the radar returns to anomalous propagation and meteors, and the visual sighting to Mars.

G.T. Gregory/18a 69216 1. attached herewith is ALIR-1-96, England (Inclosure #1), containing perti- nent information on the Mukunheath-Dentwaters sighting which was reported to this Center on 13 August 1956 with a request for immediate evaluation by Headquarters U&F. It is believed this report is in response to this Center's request for ad- ditional information (See Inclosure #2). 3. In much as headquarters UAF has expressed a desire for an expellious evaluation regarding this UFO sighting (Inciseuro 23), it is requested that this report be reviewed, together with the original data, for the purpose of arriving at a more firm conclusion. 2. On the basis of the information available at that time, it was our conclusion that the sighting was the result of anomalous propagation with the possibility of certain meteoric anomalies, which were prominent during that sighting date, a contributing factor. 2. A rough plot of the three radar and one visual observation indicate that the sightings cannot be considered as concurrent with respect to time. (Inclouure 74). A forty-five minute search of the area by a local intercept squadron proceeded no physical evidence of any unidentified object in the sky. 5. Attached for your information is an evaluation by Dr. Hynesk and Dr. Hipple which represents an approach to the sighting, primarily from an astronomical and astrophysical viewpoint from the data available at that time. It may be of some assistance in your overall study of the incident.
