'Flying Saucer'
Reports Spread
In New ~lexico
SANTA FE (UPI) - New
Mexico's perennial addiction
to flying saucers has taken
hold of the state again with
more "objects·• reported to
police over the weekend.
The latest, which brought
out the Air Force and the
FBI, was spotted early Sun-
day rr.orning at La Madera,
about 50 miles north o! San-
ta Fe. State Police Captain
Martin Vigil said, "there was
definitely something there."
Orlando Gallegos ol Santa
Fe told State Police he got
within 200 feet of a huge met-
al object that looked like an
egg-shaped butane tank. He
said flames spurted silently

the bottom o! th.e object. It ,
was as long as a telephone !
pole and e cout 14 ieet in cir- 1,
cumference, he told police.
Gallegos' report came on•
the heels o! a similar report

from a Socorro policeman,
Lonnie Zamora, who said he 1
spotted an object near Socor-
ro Friday night. Zamora, in
clearing up false reports Sun-
day, said the object rasP
about 20 feet off the ground
and slowly flew away.
Similar reports came from
a Socorro teenager, an Albu-
querque motorist, and t w o
men driving in the La Mad-
era area Saturday night. The
Albuquerque motorist, George
Mitro polis, said he saw · a
"silver looking" object. It dis-
appeared over a mountain in
the Caballo Reservoir area.
In both the Socorro and the
La Madera r e p o r t s the
ground in the areas where
the objects were reported to
have landed was scorched
and burned. Also found were
"paw prints, like a mountain
lion's," as well as "landing
gear marks" - four impres-
sions in the dirt.
Until the recent spottings,
the last unidentified fly ing ob-
ject was spotted in New Mex-
ico near Gallup late last year I
by several motorists. A cam-
pus policeman at the Univer- 1
sity of New Mexico also spot- \
ted the Gallup object flying :
