'Flying Saucer'

Mexico's perennial addiction
jto flying saucers has taken
lhold of the state again with
more "objects'' reported t
police over the weekend.
The latest, wl1ich brought
out the Air Force and the
FBI, was spotted early Sun-
day mornin_g at La Madera, ,
about 50 miles north of San- ~
ta · Fe. State Police Captain
Martin Vigil said, "there was
definitely something there."
Orlando Gallegos of Santa
Fe told State Police he got
within 200 feet of a huge met- ~
a1 object that looked like an
egg-Shaped butane tank. He
said flames spurted silently j
from numerous jets ar ou...'ld j
the bottom of the ·object. It 1
was as long as a telephone
pole and about 14 feet in cirJ 1

Gallegos' report came on I
the heels of a similar report II
from a Socorro policeman,
Lonnie Zamora, who said he
spotted an object near Socor- j
ro Friday night. Zamora, in
clearing up false reports Sun- '!
day, said the object rose
about 20 feet off the ground II
and slowly flew away.
Similar reports came from
a Socorro teenager, an Albu-
querque motorist, and t w o
men driving in the La Mad-
era area Saturday night. The '
Albuquerque motorist, George
Mitropolis, said he saw a ·
"silver looking" object. It dis- ~
appeared over a mountain in
the Caballo Reservoir area.
In both the Socorro and the
La Madera r e p o r t s the
ground in the areas · where
the objects were reported to
have landed was scorched
and· burned. Also found were
"paw prints, like a mountain
lion's," as well as "landing
gear marks" - four impres-
sions in the dirt. · J
Until the recent spottings,
the last unidentified flying ob- 1
ject was spotted in New Mex- ,
ico near Gallup late last year
by several motorists. A cam-
pus policeman at the Univer-
sity of New Mexico also spot-
ted the Gallup object flying
in the western sky at the
same time ..
