This 217-page Project Blue Book desk file on the 24 April 1964 Socorro, New Mexico sighting by policeman Lonnie Zamora comes from the Rob Mercer collection. It contains the Blue Book record card, which carries the case as unidentified pending more data, along with Foreign Technology Division messages and resumes and a narrative of the sighting. It also holds inquiries about lunar modules, helicopters and VTOL craft, soil and radiation findings, and a letter by J. Allen Hynek rejecting Donald Menzel's hoax hypothesis.
Additional. Notes to the Report: It should be noted that, at the time Zanora saw the insignia, t he craft was well illuminated by sunlight which was streaming in from Zamora's right. It might. be well to perform some experiments with placards with insignia and different patterns inscribed t hereon to see how well these are visable, under good lighting, at 100-200 feet. Additional Note: What is the power of Zamora's glasses? Does he suffer from a stigmatism? Additional Note: Several things are a pity in this situation. One is that there was not an additional witness. Second is that no photographs were taken. Th~r d , that no radars picked up the object, andfourth that the witness whom we did have was not a better observer and more articulate. Recommendations: The object which produced this, if it was a new device under test or in maneuvers, be brought to same location and movies be taken of it departing in the manner described by Zamora, and under t he same lighting conditions. This then could be played at any future hearings on flying saucers. This, it seems to me, could go a very long way toward exploding the myth 8 of flying saucers, and might do mer e goai than all the previous years of propaganda. )Rob Mercer
