NZDF declassified RNZAF UFO files

NZDF / RNZAF via Internet Archive · 2010-12 · 445 pages · text by OCR

This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

(f) Colour was orange red changing suddenly to steely blue and back to orange red.

(g) No peculiarities except that I have never observed its like before.

(h) Solid in appearance insofar as a light could be, but definitely not a reflected light.

(1) Only conversation with crew was their statement of the movements of the light on a parallel course to the aircraft at apparently high speed.

(j) I can not form any opinion concerning the nature or origin of the light, and, while trying to accept Air Commodore Cohen's opinion that it was a planet, I can only say, I have never observed a planet so definitely round in shape or so large.

(A.R. Tuckett) Senior Air Traffic Controller R.N.Z.A.F. Station, HOBSONVILLE.
