This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.
12/4 9/10 The Reinstan , Union Aviation Administration , Benny Street , Wellington . Our sin. On Sunday 30/10/55 a point o n myself observed the following from the top of Kinbarni Hill : at 3: 32 p.m. shortly after a flying boat had landed in Town Bay we saw a Black Circular object in the sky approaching from the south in over Brooklyn; the object proceeded at great height + phenomenal speed finally to disappear in a westerly direction over Int. Matthews. It had been in sight for approx. 25 seconds. My friend who first sighted the object said that it appeared to alternate between Skiptail and circular shapes as though it were wobbling on an axis from front to rear. When I saw it it retained a stable Skiptail shape and was receding at a remarkable speed with no noise. We were so extremely fascinated by what we had seen a it was the topic of conversation that evening. People who we told of our experience were seeped a unconvinced until an article appeared in the Saturday Dominion recounting phenomena seen in the waitate. It was this article that has prompted me to write in the tops that we may be able to shed light on the subject. Director of Intelligence Reputed Yours sincerely . Screen for SEA '
