This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

TIMARU Dear I have to thank you for your letter of 7th November which has been passed to RNZAF Intelligence for further action. No doubt that organisation will contact you further if it desires additional information. In passing I would add that this Administration is concerned at the statement made in the final sentence of page 1 of your letter. The flying sancer observed by your nephew and yourself may have been carrying passengers for hire and reward, which would be contrary to the Civil Aviation Regulations as the licence for this aerodrome does not include flying saucers in the categories of aircraft licensed for use. In the event that you witness any further unauthorized operations of this nature it would be appreciated if you could be more prompt in advising this Administration and if possible observe the registration markings of the aircraft so that this Administration may have the opportunity of pursuing enquiries with the operator concerned.
