This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

MRS (A GRANDMOTHER) HAD BEEN BABY SITTING IN PARK AVENUE TAKAPUNA AND WAS BEING TAKEN HOME BY CAR BY A MRS, WHO ALSO SAW THE LIGHT. THEY BOTH SAW THE LIGHT AS THE CAR PROCEMDED UP THE RISE IN PARK AVENUE (A WESTERLY DIRECTION). BOTH LADIES SAY THE LIGHT WAS A VERY BRILLIANT GREEN MOVING IN A NORTHERLY DIRECTION. IT WAS ROUND, BIGGER AND A DIFFERENT SHADE OF GREEN TO A NORMAL*LIGHT. IT LASTED FOR ABOUT 4 TO 5 SECONDS AND MOVED AT A TREMENDOUS SPEED. MRS SAYS IT SEEMED FAIRLY LOW. SAYS THERE WERE ONE OR TWO STARS ABOUT AT SAYS THERE WERE ONE OR TWO STARS ABOUT AT THAT TIME BUT IS EMPHATIC THE LIGHT WAS NOT A STAR. A CHECK WITH WP TWR SHOWED THAT THE WP ROTATING BEACON WAS NOT OPERATING AT THAT TIME.
