This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

The Minister , Civil Aviation , Wellington . Dear Sir , In the news Papers I read with very keen interest the reports of the flying lights seen by Capt. W. A. Rainbow while flying a D.C.3 at night over Warkato recently. Since you are holding an investigation into this phenomenon, I would like to pass on to you, for what value it may be, an experience which I myself had during the second world war which may on may not bear some relationship to your investigation. and service number was from the RNZAF . I was discharged holding the rank of Flight Lieutenant at that time. I am now a school teacher. During the war I flew single engine fighters both on day and night
