This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

Date: 18 N. :52 # 'Flying Saucer' Formation Over Hawera NEW PLYMOUTH, Today (PA).—Four bright circular objects in flight were seen by a Hawera farmer at 3.30am on Saturday. Mr. M. McKenzie, of Ohangai Road, Hawera, was attending to his stock when he caught sight of a formation of the four "flying saucers." He said they were flying one behind the other at a height of about 3000 feet, with about 100 yards between them. Their size "was about that of a Tiger Moth." Mr. McKenzie judged their height by seeing them in line with the Dawson Falls Hostel on Mount Egmont. They appeared to be flying from the direction of Stratford towards Kaponga and then turned back. "after a wide sweep," to Okalaawa. Mr. McKenzie watched the objects for 10 minutes before he lost sight of them. The third object appeared to be much larger than the others.
