This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

# FLYING SAUCERS. the sunlight - maybe next time we see one, it will be lower. Then we'll find out." A person living in Conn., U.S.A., (he will not allow us to release his name) discovered a three foot sphere with a revolving disc inside. The fragments proved to be highly magnetic, he claimed (and we have the photo-stats to prove it), and when analyzed was found to be "Ochalt in its native (free) state" which is not found on this Earth! The metal also contained Iron and Nickel. This incident brings to light an item in the Spring 1953, "Flying Saucer News" (Official Journal of the Flying Saucer Club, England) which claims a railway official found fragments of metal from a "swishing, multi-coloured, hollow cylinder". They are being examined by Dr. Graham White (member, British Interplanetary Society), reports the Rhodesia Herald - 1.10 a.m., February 8th 1953. FOOTNOTE: A recent letter from Mr. Richard Hughes, Sec. Flying Saucer Club, England. Mr. Hughes states that he had written to Dr.G. White but had not after a reasonable lapse of time received any reply. He presumes the information he requested is restricted. ## EXTRACTS FROM "FLYING SAUCER NEWS" OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF FLYING SAUCER CLUB, ENGLAND. ## INDIA SUGGESTS - "A SPACE STATION" a luminous nocturnal object, variously described as "the moon's younger sister", a "Flying Saucer", "Space Station" or just plain meteor" was reported to have been noticed in the skies over Madras from points as far apart as 400 miles, between December 4th and 10th last. The object was of a blue-green colour and emitted a trail of orange sparks as it flew horizontally in an east-west direction. Its size - "half as big as the moon" - raised the speculation that it might be a space station 7,000 to 8,000 miles above the earth, moving in a fixed orbit, says a United Press report: ## AFRICAN SIGHTINGS. Several photographs have been published in South African newspapers (viz: "Rhodesia Herald", "Natal Mercury" and "Oaye Argus") of a strange sky object seen in BULAWAYO in early January. One photo includes an inset of a much-enlarged portion showing the "object". This appears to us to be a collection of closely spaced vapour-like trails - as though made by an aircraft flying in tight circles. Since this photograph appeared, there have been reports of saucer-sightings in CAPETOWN (bright stationary object, with lights flashing on and off. Visible 14 min. from 9a.m. January 29th) and again in BULAWAYO (5 saucers-600 to 7000 feet. 10.20a.m.8th February.
