This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

Donald Keyhoe's earlier book "THE FLYING SAUCERS ARE REAL" was published in 1950. He was originally hired by the publishers of american"TRU" magazine and commenced investigation as a sceptic. On the 6th and 9th of October 1953 two outstanding sightings of strange airborn objects were reported in much detail by English News-Papers. (Copies on file) At 7.15 p.m. 6th Oct 1953 Mr F.W.Potter,member of Norwich Astronomical Society, watched a Flying Disc shaped craft through a 3 1/2 inch Refractor Telescope for 3 1/2 minutes. Mr Potter made a detailed sketch of the object which also appeared in the press report. Other reliable witnesses supported his sighting (source, Eastern Evening News 8th Oct 1953.) Lt 9 a.m. 9th Oct 1953, the Captain, First Officer and Steward of a B.E.L. Airliner flying from London to Paris, watched what appeared to be a large elliptical disc-shaped highly polished metallic aircraft for over thirty minutes. The Unidentified object was flying above and forward of them in perfectly clear sky conditions. The full page report by the London Sunday Dispatch 18th Oct, leaves no doubt that the Pilots tried their hardest to find a natural explanation. Captain petr. Fletcher and First Officer Leon both with many years of flying experience are satisfied that they saw a solid controlled Flying Ship. Inclusive in the News report is the following statement. The R.A.F. made a serious investigation of the Oct 1952 sighting of a flying Disc reported by Air-Force personnel dueing Operation Mainbrace, and did not dismiss the report as "Meteorological Phenomena". Last week the Air Ministry said that the special department set up to investigate reports of Flying Saucers have received Captain Fletcher's report and experts are now evaluating it. The new book "THE FLYING SAUCERS HAVE LANDED" by Desmond, Leslie and George Adamski published by T Werner Laurie London, has caused more excited speculous. President of C.3.I.(NZ) is assured through correspondence with the publisher, that the publishers are satisfied Adamski's story is true and have sworn affidavits to support their documents. The book published in mid September 53 has already sold over 12,000 copies. The much disputed author of "BEHIND THE FLYING SAUCERS" Frank Scully is also preparing another book. The renewed confidence expressed by Scully in a recent published statement, leaves one with the thought that many or his theories propounded in his earlier book may be correct after all. In the light of past and present evidence and the greater than ever activity expected of the future, the most successful example of security or hide and seek in the annals of earth history, must soon break for all to see.
