This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

For instance, Dr. Peter Millman, chief of Canada's Dominion Observatory's astrophysics division, says: "Most sightings of flying saucers could be explained as natural phenomena, but there still remains a concrete group of reports that are "unexplained." That would be a great number if only it were just 10% unexplained. He also said it was a mistake to ridicle anyone who made a sincere report. Many, many reports are made each month by men of science, who should be able to identify a kite or a balloon if they saw one. About 2000 reports have been handed in in the last five years, and no one can tell me that Dr. Ellyet has ever seen them, let alone studied them, while government scientists from other countries have been busy on then all the time and are more cautious as to their opinions of them. The United States Air Force has even set up 400 special cameras to get their own special photos of flying saucers. Why all this preparation if Dr. Ellyet has all the answers? I have on my files from the Dunedin area alone eight report of objects seen over the last three months. If no one else is, we are still interested in receiving these reports, as the majority of your readers are, I am sure, still not satisfied concerning the origin of flying saucers. D.A.Metcalf. As one news commentator remarked, " It must have been an ancestor of the ones that have been flitting about our skies of late." (March issue"Saucers" "FLYING SAUCER OBSERVATORY". From Vienna comes news that Russia has established an observatory for "flying saucers". Somewhere in Mongolia. It has only recently been completed. This is the first news from Russia of any Soviet interest in the phenomena of "flying saucers"; Viennese scientists believe that there are several aims behind this project----first to watch for and investigate by secret electronic processes any mysterious objects in the sky, and, secondly for astronomical observations next summer when the Earth and Mars come nearest to one another----40,000,000 miles. A mysterious explosion rocked this port early today, shattering windows, blasting open doors and waking most of the inhabitants. The explosion was preeeded by a flash in the sky. Some people said the explosion came 4 minutes after the flash. Some said eight minutes, and they also differed on the direction. The flash was seen 50 miles away. A railwayman at Orchies, near the Belgian border, said he saw a fiery dics invthe sky moving at great speed at the time of the Dieppe explosion.
