This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

night and no sign of a storm locally or on the horizon, the President of the Hamilton Flying Saucer Investigation Society is investigating a sighting of Flying Saucer that was reported by a local resident at 9.30 that night. ( the date of the explosion and the sighting was Saturday 7th November) ( omitted the word Saturday in quoting from the Press report.) (2) Insufferable and violent stanches, likened to rotten eggs, burnt plastic or sulphur, have been reported many times particularly by all those who have encountered the landed objects. This stench has also been noted on other significant occasions not necessarily associated with landings or sightings. One of these incidents has a very personal touch for the presidents of A.F.S.B. and C.S.I. NZ. ## ```markdown ``` ## RECENT .N.Z SIGHTINGS IN BRIEF. The frequency of reports are again increasing with a new high peak expected in the New Year. Here are the places,dates,times of sightings etc.:- September 20th Lower Hut between 10.45 & 11.45 p.m. moving light bright gold in colour, seen several nights. Carter Observatory unable to ident. August 21st New Plymouth 11 a.m. Whitish grey object,like fluorescent tube approx 40.00 ft up, several observers, one heard whirring noise. August 25th Christchurch 6.40 p.m. fast moving strange light horizon tal course, in view 8 seconds, left trail. October 15th Hobsonville Auckland 3.45p.m. like an electric light bulb moving aircraft speed,no noise ,horizontal course. October 21 at Hamilton 3.15a.m. Orange coloured disc moving across sky at great speed looked 9-10ft diameter, swaying and revolving motion. October 28th Christchurch 10.30p.m. and several times later fast moving lights. several independent observers one light soomed up skyward. November 5th Gisbourne 10.38p.m. Orange coloured disc appeared to be revolving, surrounded by an eerie hallow. Rose high above harbour and disappeared with altitude. definately not fireworks. ## ter November 7th Hamilton 9.30 p.m. dislike object, mysterious loud explosion right on midnight. no explanation for explosion, clear night. November 12th Silverdale Auckland 9.10-10p.pm. Bright stationary light clear sky disappeared and reappeared a number of times. Not Planet. November 15th Russell white disco object moving at great speed,horizonta: flight 7p.m. many observers. ,object appeared to emit silent explosions of blue sparks. many convinced that the object was not a meteor. November 16th Christchurch 10.30p.m. professional man reported strange twinkling red light moving at great speed on level course,no trail.
