This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

WE HAVE THE PLEASURE OF INTRODUCING TO YOU MR E.R. JARROLD. PRESIDENT OF"AUSTRALIAN FLYING SAUCER BUREAU". Mr Jarrold, aged 35, returned to Australia some time ago after spending five years adventurously globe trotting; is married and has two young boys of school age. Has been interested in most scientific subjects from a very early age, with Astronomy and Space-Travel predominating. Has his own private library of over 200 scientific works; likes light reading as well, but can never find the time now, so great is the pressure of "Flying Saucer research." Since formation of A.F.S.B. July 1952 no time has been found for relaxation or vacation, however, he hopes to make a break August next year but fears that the typewriter will refuse to be left behind. Mr Jarrold's entrance into the flying saucer picture commenced when he became interested in the early 1947 sightings of mysterious objects flashing around global skies, his interest increased tenfold when further outstanding sightings were reported dueing 1951. One of these sightings he witnessed personally. Over a Sydney Suburb in May of that year, he saw two bright yellow lights that appeared to betoken intelligent control, but the lights had no distinguishable solid body as far as he could determine. Personal investigations of this and other sightings, left him with the realization that no official body existed in Australia for the recording and correlation of reports of this nature, so on July 31st 1952 singlehanded, he formed the Australian Flying Saucer Bureau. From the subsequent investigation and evaluation of all the facts, Mr Jarrold soon became strongly of the opinion that that the " Flying Saucers were very real. Ho was also near convinced that the objects were coming across space from the nearby Planet Mars and were subjecting old Terra Firma to a thorough inspection. A.F.S.B. has appointed representatives in most of the larger Australian cities who act as official observers to the parent body. He has also established friendly relations with the majority of the kindred organizations overseas; this global link-up has greatly benefitted all. Mr Jarrold edits the bureau's official publication "THE AUSTRALIAN LINING SAUCER MAGAZINE", which C.S.I. NZ considers one of the best in the field, the magazine is printed; is a Quarterly and costs 2/- per copy or 8/- per four issues. Address your request to 3 Ferguson Avenue Fairfield New South Wales. NZ is much indebted to Mr Jarrold, he has kept us posted of all Australian sightings, and passes on most interesting information gleaned from overseas organizations not normally corresponded by C.S.I. Mr Jarrold has also promised to forward copies or prints of the mysterious object that was photographed by the Deputy Regional Commissioner of the Australian Civil Aviation Dept, while that gentleman was visiting Port Moresby New Guinea on August 31st 1953.
