This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

(I) It is common knowledge among investigators that the bigger flurry of sightings occur in cycles (Mars in Opposition), that in each consecutive approach, particularly the last four, the frequency of sightings have shown a marked increase. The 1954 and 1956 Oppositions will see Mars and Earth as very near close as possible in their orbits, so cutting the distance between the planets by millions of miles. (refer article by Lonzo Dove) (2) Leading investigators in the field and all authors of books on the subject, Gerald Heard, Ex Major Donald Keyhoe, (USMC)Desmond Leslie and Frank Scully, besides being convinced that the "flying Saucers" are interplanetary craft controlled by intelligent beings, have also mooted that late 1953 or early 1964 will be the critical period. (3) Now we have George Adamski's experience published in "FLYING SAUCERS HAVE LANDED". Adamski has involved the American Air Force in his story on a number of occasions. Has the American Air Force repudiated or denied such reference. Does not this leave Adamski wide open to exposure, IF his story was not true. In this same book as a closing three page section (Record of lecture and discussion on the subject of "saucers" at a conference for reserve Air Force Officers Ist June 1953) many remarkable statements were made by a responsible Air Force Official. All left the conference with the unofficial directive and assurance that the flying saucers were real and interplanetary. (U.S.Air Force Officers) (4) Recent outstanding sightings in England reported by R.A.F. Civil Airways, and Army Anti-Aircraft, crews, were further and positively confirmed by Radar and Telescope. Over Pretoria South Africa too, Air Force Officers sighted objects, they further stated that their Radar contact was with something "undoubtedly solid". C.S.I. published and posted to leading NZ News papers a special News Release dated 1st November. Recent overseas cable news has confirmed much of the views and data contained in our news release. Reproduced is our most recent summary. (Extract Ist Nov Release) :--- Recent developments in the investigation of flying saucers from all sources of information, compel us to accredit the following as to be a correct prospectus of the truth. (a) That Flying Saucers are interplanetary and are controlled by an intelligent race of beings. (b) That the United States authorities in particular, through their Air Force's six-year full-scale intensified investigation, have the answer and the greatest knowledge of the matter.
