# Police Prowl For 'Saucers'

VIENNA, Oct. 18 (Rec. 11am). Herr Josef Holaubek, the Vienna Police President, has instructed his men to report immediately all stories of "flying saucers" and "visitors from another planet."—N.Z.P.A.-Reuter.

# CLAIM MADE IN BROADCAST Flying Saucermen Reported Captive

FLYING saucers haye not only landed, but there are some, with their crews, in captivity at a U.S. air base, says Mr. Glyn T. Benjamin, Central African representative of the Flying Saucer Club of Britain.

In a broadcast from Salisbury, Rhodesia, some weeks ago, which was reported in the Salisbury "Sunday Mail," lie quoted a letter he had received from Professor Mead Layne, head of a research group in San Diego, California.—

"There are landed discs now at Muroc Lake Air Base, California. Our technicians have examined these craft with the aid of the spacemen themselves, and can make nothing of them, either of the metal, mechanism, or propulsion.

President Eisenhower visited this air base secretly while at Palm Springs, California, lately.

"It all sounds incredible, but it happens to be factual as we have verified this."

Mr. Benjamin also quoted an extract from a letter written to him by Desmond Leslie, a British flying saucer expert:—

"I can assure you from high-level talks I have had here that the authorities are taking a very sensible

and serious attitude towards these investigations, but are quite rightly reserving their public announcement until they have something tangible to show the unthinking mass of voters." Mr. Benjamin quoted Professor Mead Layne as saying that, to know more about flying saucers, the public would have to be prepared to receive information "of a metaphysical nature."

# Rockets Superseding Flying Saucers?

Accompanying the report was a photograph showing two raincoated Earthmen each holding a hand of a diminutive figure wearing a type of vees, a sleeveless upper garment and calf-length boots. One of five photographs printed by a Cologne newspaper, according to the "Sunday Mall," its caption read: "Only 75cm. high is this man from Mars." The War Department declares: 'It is not proven that he comes from Mars, but it is positive that he came from one of the planets of our solar system or a neighbouring star.'"

For the observer, Mr D. A. Medcalf, president of the Dunedin branch of the Civilian Saucer Investigators, it was the highlight of a hum-drum day. He was perched on the tin roof of his washhouse on one of his routine watches, which all members of the saucer observing group share, when a flickering light drew his attention to the north-east sky.

Flying saucers may be on the way out if the object claimed to have been seen in the north-eastern sky last night was not an illusion. For 20 minutes a man, seated upon the roof of his washhouse, noted the gyrations of a rocket-shaped "thing" as it climbed and turned about. He even saw the spurts of light emitted from the "jets" of the strange craft.

"I hadn't watched this area for some time, but the dodging light and the flickering on and off of the "thing" caught my eye as I turned to look at my cabbage patch below me. I watched as the thing hovered, dashed inside, and brought out my special night glasses to get a better view," he said this morning.

"Back on the roof again, I focused the glasses, and at once saw that it was not an ordinary flying saucer. It was a glowing silver colour, and it hovered in the sky, like a wobbling, shifting star. At times the movements were so erratic and jerky that I became giddy watching.

"Most of the time it was practically circular, but every now and then it changed its position, and I saw a definite rocket-shaped nose on the craft, as it raced northwards, high in the sky above the sea.

"The movement of the object seemed similar to that of a rocket," he said. "Then it shot south with

definite white and blue explosions at the stern and it could be seen jerking forward with every explosion, like a water boatman (a water insect) darting ahead in a pool. One explosion lasted about a second and it lit up the sky about it. On each occasion it carried out these strange aerobatics, the thing returned almost to the same spot it had started from, except when it finally dashed across the orbit of my glasses and disappeared from sight away to the south-east," he said.

Mr Medcalf jumped from the washhouse roof and raced inside to note the phenomena he had witnessed. It was the second time he had seen a strange object in the sky, and the only thing he was sorry about was that he has no camera capable of taking photographs at night.

"This will keep me interested. I've watched until four in the morning for four weeks and I was beginning to lose heart. I only hope someone else saw it, as I want to compile notes for the Dominion Saucer Investigations Group," he said.

Footnote: The Meteorological Department released a special balloon last night, but the department was sure that it would be out of sight at 12.15 a.m., when the rocket was seen. The Industries Fair officials said this morning that the rocket in the Concert Chamber was not chained to the ground last night.

# TALKED TO PILOT More Light (?) On Flying Saucers

TOULON, Oct. 18 (Rec. 9.30am). Two French motor-cyclists swore at Toulon today that they had talked to the "pilot" of a flying saucer parked in the middle of Hyeres-Toulon road on the night of October 14.

The two men, Mario Rapellini and Pierre Ottoviani, told the police they found the flying saucer was a circular object with two legs resting on the ground. It had a bulge on top and two ear-like openings at the side.

As they gingerly approached, they said, a medium-sized man, "dressed in grey overalls of some strange material stepped out."

The following conversation took place in French:

Rapellini: "Are you a Martian?" Stranger: "No, I'm French. Where am I?" They told the "pilot" where he was. He re-entered his machine through a "triangular opening," a stream of vapour issued from the saucer, it rose slowly vertically into the air as its motor roared up. It then streaked off at great speed, leaving an orange glow in its wake.—N.Z.P.A.—Reuter.
