This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

## LATEST FROM THE AMERICAS' Via Mr C.H.Marck, C.S.I."Observer" Colorado U.S.A. May 10th I954, Frank Edwards announced over his news commentary programme, "What happened to the flying saucer", Wright Field Dayton, Ohio, has closed the lid on all saucer sightings and developments, Lately in Peru, South America, the people there are seeing the saucers daily, in fact they have seen then so many times they think the saucers have a base nearby. All sighters agree that the discs appear to be interplanetary craft. May IIth--- An article in the "Anchorage Daily" Alaska, states, several pepple in that area saw some glowing circular objects, Air Force officials stated they had no idea what they were. May I3th. Major Keyhoe guest speaker on Frank Edwards programme stated: In the closing week of March I954 Secretary of the Air Force, Harold E. Talbott, was on a flight to Palm Springs California, on this flight Talbott's plane was approached by a silvery disc (daylight) to within a 1000 ft below and aft. Sec., Talbott ordered the plane to close in with the silvery disc, when the pilot attempted this the 'Saucer' streaked off and out of sight. Keyhoe also stated, "Two artificial Satellites are going round the earth in space. Government scientists are going to try and find out just what is going on, it is time the peoples new the facts". July 2. Saucers sightings are really increasing, many are making banner headlines in local papers but are not being put on Wire Services. On May 18th Frank annourood-- A news-letter giving all saucer news is about to be published monthly. Director Mr Leonard H. Stringfield; (ex Air Force) P.O. Box I855 Cincinnati 27,Ohio. Sub 2 Dollars per year. This NewsLetter gives the very latest saucer sightings, Pentagon and Wright Field Developments. On June 8th Mr Stringfield phoned Lt.Col.John O'Mara,Deputy Commander of Intelligence at Wright Field. In 16 minutes he asked many questions. Here are some of the answers that were published in the July 2 issue, of the News-Letter. [1] Avarage of 700 sightings are reported to the Air Force a week. [2] There are 87 cases under "special analysis". (3) Over 1000 of the nations leading scientists are working on government saucer projects. (4) Dr. Clyde Tombough and Dr. Lincoln La Paz are heading the project in White Sands, New Mexico. Here scientists are tracking two artificial satellites circling the earth. (5) Secretary Talbott's aircraft was paced by "Unidentified Flying Objet over Fresco California in March 1954. Letter dated July 10th Washington D.C. has been visited by saucers several times in the last few months, Shortly after midnight on May 12 1954, Air Police at Washington National Airport watched two large glowing objects, which zipped into view at high speed, made three passes between 12.45 and 2.08 a.m. the following morning. The objects came across the nations! Capital from the northeast, veered off and swung southward. The Air Policeman watched the objects through night glasses. He reported that they were apparently circular in shape, and that they glowed with pulsating lights. Said the Air Force spokesman, don't call them 'Flying Saucers', they are "Unidentified Flying Objects". On the following afternoon an electronics expert was checking some special equipment in Washington. Shortly after I.p.m. the equipment picked up some sort of huge object at great altitude, approaching the city at a speed of 150 - 170 m.p.h. It came over the capital at an altitude of 10 miles, moved slowly about and was recorded on the equipment for almost three hours.
