This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

at about 2.45 a.m. Suddenly I was awakened from a deep sleep by a "voice" inside my brain; "Look out the window; Look out the window". I arose from my bed to see what it was all about, drawing back the curtains I was amazed to see, not more than 100 feet in the air, a bell-shaped object. I was about to awaken my wife when, suddenly, a "voice" said, "just watch, don't move". This was repeated a number of times. I felt as though I was paralysed. I watched the object and noted that it would be about 30 feet across, and appeared to be black in colour. Around the upper 'Dome' there appeared to be a metal(?) band, with square cut windows. From these windows there appeared rays of medium bright light. Underneath the object there was, faintly visible, two or three (hard to say definitely) spherical objects. I do admit that after I had returned to bed, the object reminded me of the same craft as observed by George Adamski, of America, and the Derbyshire lads of England. Detailed report Date of sighting 10th July 1954. Time 3.30 a.m. Weather, cloudy and very cold. The direction of travel--- object stationary. The object is best described as 'Bell-shaped'. Approx dia---- 30 feet. Around upper 'Dome' appeared to be a band with square windows. A medium bright light appeared at the windows. The band revolved very slowly. There was no other light from the object. Colour: hard to say, appeared to be black or very dark grey. Approx height was 100 feet from road. The only movement was a slight swaying motion. After 7 (seven) minutes the object moved slowly (approx 20 n.p.h.) to disappear in the clouds. NOTE After commencing to move all lights were extinguished on the craft. Wind, light to medium; west by N.west. Position of observer; looking through bedroom window. No attempt was made to approach object, something telling him not to. Object finally rose to disappear in clouds. There was no witnesses SWORN STATEMENT This statement is made by John E Stuart, of IO James Street, claudelands, Hamilton. I, John E. Stuart, do hereby solemnly swear that the report, to which I have appended my name, is true in every particular. I further swear that the object observed by me, and as described in the report, was no figment of the imagination, or was it a dream. Signed this I9th day of July, 1954 John E.
