This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

(To the Editor) "J.W.B." and "Pluto" seem to be frustrated because Mr. Malden in his address on "Flying Saucers" to the Royal Society in Napier last week, failed to add anything to support their knowledge of "Airborne crockery". "Pluto" in particular appears to have read "most everything there is to read about these phenomena, and, in consequence, is no wiser than he was before. He assimilated all this knowledge. As regards the appearance of a saucer" over the Taita speedway, this can perhaps be explained by the fact that "Broadside, Disk" was the star that might and the visitors just popped down for a free look. However, to compensate "if W.B." and "Pluto" for their disappointment, I am enclosing photos of an object taken at Tuali—a most significant locality because of the big hydro-electric scheme and possible future strategic objectives. The photos were taken with a box camera, and the film is in no way touched up. On rare occasions I have shown this photos to confirmed believers in flying sancers with rather strange psychological reactions. Without exception the enthusiasm melts away and a confused logical ambiguity dominates their thoughts. Had this photo appeared in the American Space Saver publication, their would be no question of its unreserved acceptance. I can only add if anyone believes my something they have never seen then here's a photo of it. You may publish any of these if you wish. They have not been offered for publication before. Falling that, anyone can see them in their original form. I make two reservations—that they be turned to me, and that I will answer no questions pertaining to same.
