This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

Auckland Mr. Ronald E Golding 8th November 1954 Dear Sir, Your letter of the I6th September received with interest and thanks some time ago and has been waiting patiently for a reply. I have been, as usual in this project, extraordinary busy and am reaching the stage of absolute capacity; only hope the authorites soon let the cat out of the bag, then perhaps I will be able to let up a bit. Thank you for offering your services as Unofficial liaison officer, it was understood that information would be mostly one way traffice. There is much data that I would like to send on to you and I am sure you would be interested, however finding the time to make copy of file material is really most difficult. As a married man with a home and its environs, lawns, hedges etc, all demanding attention, you will appreciate that wishfull thinking won't keep them in presentable order. Have just received the squadron's quota of "Contact (Nov) and note your further article on the subject, it represents a good cross section of recent happenings and is bound to achieve it purpose of making "Contact" readers think,- food for thought. Thank you for the mention in October issue of "Contact"; I hope you have received some communications from observers of unusual phenomena, there are many individuals who have never reported "sightings" of their own or knowledge. Hope you received a copy of our Sept Magazine "Flying Saucers and the Newsletter that followed a little later, accompanying this letter is an article on the subject I wrote early this year, which I have recently added a postscript to and had reproduced to forward all members. Another article written by a USAR Major and recently published in US Pageant Magazine (Nov) (on File) tells of the major's investigation of the mystery thread substance seen to fall from the skies from unseen, lone, and flights of strange objects. The investigator comes to the same conclusions I have in my article. Received a letter from one of our members in Napier a few days ago telling of a strange bowl-shaped object that he saw fall from a clear sky. As the object fell it made a whissing sound, hit the wharf. pier he was standing on and then bounced high and landed on a Government survey vessel.
