NZDF declassified RNZAF UFO files

This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

"Consider report an excellent example of 'unidentified flying objects' which defies 'natural phenomena' explanation. Béhieve if brief details received are correct, observers witnessed transit of vehicle controlled by extraterrestrial agency. Currently many reports being received at our headquarters Expert reports to reach meek volume over Christmas. A superior report may well prove most outstanding New Zealand observation." The telegram is signed: "Harold, P.H. Fulton, Dominion President, Civilian Saucer Investigation (N.Z.). P.O. Box 1914, Auckland." (Footnote.—The planet Venus would be setting in the west about the same time as the lights in the sky above the Porarte hills is reported to have been seen. To-night it will set shortly before 9 o'clock, though, with hills to the west, it will go below the crest of the hills a little before that time.)
Wednesday night's report of a strange light over the Poraite hills created interest from the Civilian Saucer Investigation (N.Z.).organisation in Auckland. To-day the following telegram was received by The Daily Telegraph from the president of the organisation:
