This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

"SCOTISH DAILY MAIL" "I WAS TERRIFIED AS IT WENT PAST," HE SAYS. CLOSE-UP OF THE GREAT GALLOWAY HILLS MYSTERY - WHAT CAN THIS THING BE? This is reported to have happened on approximately the 29th October, 1955, one of many English reports. IN THE LITTLE KIRKCUDBRIGHTSHIRE VILLAGE OF BALMACLELLAN TNEY DON'T JOKE ANY MORE ABOUT "THE THING" WHICH VILLAGER MAURICE BRAZIER (32) SAW ONE NIGHT AS HE DROVE HOME,ALONG ONE OF THE LONLIEST ROADS IN SCOTLAND. For since he told the police of the "Flying Saucer" he saw that night there have been other stories of mysterious objects being seen in the bleak, desolate hills of Galloway. "At first the villagers scoffed and joked", said Mr. Brazier, a mobile mechanic with the Forestry Commission. "They don't now." "The story sounds so fantastic that I only told the police and a few intimate friends. ## TEETOTALLER: "It is so hard to believe that even they were at first sceptical, but I finally convinced them that I was in my sober senses - I am a teetotaller - and that with my war-time experience in the R.A.F., I knew what I was talking about." "It was about 7.30 p.m. and Mr. Brazier was motoring from Newton-Stewart along the deserted hill road to New Galloway. "I was hurrying home," he said, "because I had geard my little boy was in an accident. I saw a light reflection on the hillside which I took to be the lights of an approaching car, and I expected to meet it at the corner ahead." "There then appeared in front of me a large illuminated object, and my first thought was that it was a helicopter with a mountain rescue unit, and I said to myself that they were taking a risk in flying so low over such hilly country. But the object came on and assumed a very large illiptical shape, fully 60 ft. in length." "It was flying not more than 40 ft. up, with bluish lights along its side. As it came nearer I was badly scared and, stopping the van, I jumped out. Mr. Brazier continued, "It was then that I saw that the shape was that of a huge double saucer with lights all along the outer rim, and it appeared to revolve clockwise, the inner drum being of a dull metallic colour which reflected the lights. If I have ever had a fright it was that night," added Brazier. "Twenty minutes later when I arrived home my wife was alrmed at my agitation and white face." Other people in the district have been having strange experiences. ## NO HELICOPTER: A forestry worker at Dalmacallum reported seeing a weird looking object rising from the hills one morning. Mr. H. McWilliam, a garage proprietor in New Galloway, remembered the red orb which flashed across the sky while he was travelling through the hills some months ago. continued over page The "SCOTISH DAILY MAIL" 24th Nov. further reports that a Mr. James Jardine, a Dunfries Ironmonger, saw a very similar object which came to within 30 ft of him during a bright sunny day as he was eating a roadside picnic lunch.
