This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

Le Commandant d'un BO AC stratocruiser, le captain James HOWARD nous en a fourni une autre et nous lui en sommes particulièrement obligés.

A fin Juin dernier, il survolait à 19 000 pieds Goose Bay, dans le Labrador lorsqu'il aperçut des objets ayant l'allure de "gelée de poisson" dont il a tracé le dessin. Ils suivaient ou précédaient tour à tour son appareil. Ils changeaient constamment de forme. Un radar alerté ne pu les déceler sur son écran. Ils disparurent au bout d'environ 25 minutes.

Le Captain HOWARD déclara en rentrant en Angleterre qu'il n'avait fait que décrire ce que lui, son équipage et ses passagers avaient vu et qu'il se refusait à envisager l'idée d'engins propulsés.

Il ajouta qu'il avait 7 500 heures de vol et qu'il ne pouvait s'agir d'un mirage ou de lueurs réfléchies dans les nuages.

Ce que nous avons proposé comme solution d'un problème qui a fait couler beaucoup d'encre explique tout ce qu'a rapporté James HOWARD.

Nous avions parfois l'impression, en rédigeant ces notes, que dès ombres légères se penchaient sur nous. C'étaient sans doute celles des Dieux que nous avions évoqués.

Elles ne sont pas toutes enfermées dans ces linceuls de pourpre où dorment les grands morts.
