Sous l'influence de la chaleur, des constituants peuvent atteindre leur point de fusion et même de volatilisation, provoquant une fissure de l'enveloppe. Un nuage se forme, se condense, une soucoupe apparaît qui flotte pendant quelque temps au gré des vents et se dissipe enfin sans laisser de traces.
On a observé la chute des météorites depuis les temps les plus reculés. Ce sont les Egyptiens qui, les premiers, en ont fait mention. On en trouve dans des hiéroglyphes de la 5ème à la 7ème dynastie, c'est-à-dire de 2750 à 2450 ans avant J.C. Ils les appelaient "Typhon", Dieu du mal et des ténèbres parce que leur chute amenait parfois des catastrophes.
Les chinois avaient tiré l'aiguille aimantée de ce fer d'origine céleste, il y a environ 46 siècles.
Les siècles s'ajoutaient aux siècles, les météorites gardaient toujours le secret de leur origine.
Le 26 Avril 1803, il en tomba deux mille de petite dimension dans un espace de 50 km. carrés, près de Laigle, en Normandie. Un membre de l'Institut, BIOT, fut chargé d'une enquête qui confirma l'origine extra-terrestre de ces fragments. C'étaient des pierres contenant dix pour cent d'un alliage de fer et de nickel.
