This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

Et cette crédulité, que rapportent ses biographes, nous a été confirmée par un de nos bons amis, le Docteur Henri Leclerc, latiniste et botaniste distingué qui avait longtemps pratiqué, en étudiant les vertus des plantes, ce copieux historien des sciences et des légendes d'il y a vingt siècles.

A cette époque lointaine, le langage avait gardé une certaine noblesse, tout au moins dans l'élite. On ne parlait pas de "soucoupes" mais de "boucliers volants". Ils étaient de forme allongée. Un bouclier pouvait évoquer une menace. Qu'aurait-on craint d'une soucoupe ? Depuis lors, Bacchus a supplanté Mars. Les visions guerrières se sont transformées en visions diónysiaques et ceci explique sans doute les imprécisions de ceux qui les ont décrites.

Il fallut attendre un peu plus de douze siècles pour hoter, dans la mémoire des hommes, une autre arrivée d'engins inconnus.

Des documents anglais rapportent qu'en 1290, un objet rond et plat, paraissant être de l'argent, survola l'Abbaye de Byland dans le Comté d'York causant une très grande terreur parmi les moines.

C'est seulement en 1947 que les soucoupes volantes excitèrent un grand intérêt, quand dix d'entre elles furent aperçues se déplaçant à la vitesse de 1000 miles à l'heure, au-dessus du Mont Rainier, à Washington. Sur quels repères avait-on mesuré cette vitesse fantastique ?

Les imaginations s'échauffèrent à tel point que, bientôt, on en signala des milliers sans jamais apporter la moindre preuve de leur existence.
