This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

Les Américains, malgré leur civilisation mécanisée, ont héréité de la crédulité des Anglais, mais leur culture, un peu trop spécialisée leur a fait perdre le sens de la mesure dans le domaine d'un au-delà aux contours mal définis et ceci explique le nombre élevé d'objets volants non identifiés aux U.S.A.

Les écclésiastiques anglo-saxons ont été, eux aussi, victimes de ces hallucinations collectives.

Un révérend père allemand déclarait, récemment, au cours d'une réunion de théologiens, que les chrétiens devaient penser à leur attitude envers ces visiteurs venus d'une autre planète et qui observaient la nôtre depuis huit ans. Un clergymen britannique se posait la même question.

L'un et l'autre auraient pu savoir qu'un savant latiniste de la Curie Romaine, Monseigneur Antonio Bacci, avait découvert dans la Naturalis Historia de Pline l'Ancien, qui ne comprend pas moins de 37 volumes, que celui-ci avait déjà mentionné sous le nom de "clipei volantes" d'étranges apparitions. Pline était mort en 79, à la suite de l'éruption de l'Etna. Il commandait alors la flotte de Misène. Avait-il observé lui-même ce fait mystérieux en cherchant dans le Ciel la Petite Ourse qui servait alors de guide aux navigateurs ? Il est probable qu'on le lui avait simplement narré et qu'il l'avait noté avec son habituelle
