This is a New Zealand Defence Force public release of RNZAF file AIR 39/3/3, "Flying Saucers," which covers 1952 to 1955 and was declassified in September 2010 under the Official Information Act. It collects sighting reports from the public and military personnel, press clippings, and a table of 1952 sightings. It also holds Carter Observatory opinions attributing some reports to meteors. A large part covers the inquiry into lights seen from National Airways Corporation Flight 108 on 31 October 1955, which the RNZAF could not fully explain as Venus.

Depuis la fin de la guerre, on a beaucoup parlé d'engins inconnus, venus, disait-on, d'autres planètes. On leur a donné le nom de "Soucoupes Volantes".

Les Anglo-Saxons semblent avoir été particulièrement frappés par ces apparitions. Aux U.S.A. 1'observation de 85 pour cent d'entre elles a cependant été expliquée de la façon la plus naturelle. En Angleterre, cette proportion est tombée à 5 pour cent.

Les U.F.O.s - Unidentified Flying Objects - comme les appellent les Anglais, ont fait; chez eux, l'objet de rapports quasi secrets.

Mais l'Angleterre est le pays d'élection du surnaturel. Pas de vieux château qui ne soit hanté. Pas de lac d'Ecosse dont les eaux ne cachent quelque mystère. Les malheurs du "GREAT EASTERN" victime, pendant un demi-siècle, d'une invraisemblable malchance, ont été attribués à un fantâme.

Les soucoupes ont éclipsé aujourd'hui les revenants! Elles ont même fait oublier le monstre du Lockness.

Une pointe de superstition convient très bien à une vieille civilisation nourrie des souvenirs de la Grèce, où les Dieux, qui s'ennuyaient dans l'Olympe, se mêlaient facilement des affaires des hommes. Seuls les demi-Dieux sont restés. La chrétienté les a adoptés. Elle les a canonisés. Ils continuent à entretener une croyance indécise dans des puissances inconnues. ON les trouve encore dans les bois et autour des fontaines dont les saux deviennent, grâce à eux, bienfaisantes. La lune, en s'y reflétant, peut donner à des imaginations fertiles, l'illusion d'une soucoupe volante.

N'a-t-on pas découvert tout récemment, à Londres, dans Cannon Street, en creusant les fondations d'un building de 14 étages, les ruines d'un temple romain construit il y a 1700 ans en l'honneur de Mithra, Dieu de la lumière. On a enlevé les pierres. On a garde la tête du Dieu. Il aura pardonné
