This Black Vault release contains the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's March 23, 2017 response to John Greenewald's FOIA request 2017-0368 for UFO records collected since 1975. The NRC withheld identifying information. The records cover three allegation files. The first is a 2010 Region IV case about a former security officer who said a triangular UFO hovered over the protected area at Cooper Nuclear Station between 1986 and 1989. The other two are a 1997 letter claiming DoD flew nuclear-powered craft from New Mexico and a 1998 California complaint.
September 9, 1997 r (7)(C) SUBJECT: ALLEGATION NO. RIV-1997-A-0018 Dear l(b)(7)(C) This letter refers to your August 31, 1997 letter. In your letter, you requested help in obtaining the results of routine aerial surveys performed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), as described in a May 17, 1992, newspaper article in the Alamogordo Daily News. My February 20, 1997, letter described those areas that fall within NRC jurisdiction. The information you requested is not within NRC jurisdiction. However, this information may be available from the DOE by filing a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. We have obtained a mailing address for a local DOE office, which is P.O. Box 5400, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87185. The enclosure to this letter is the NRC brochure, "Reporting Safety Concerns to the NRC." The brochure contains information that you may find helpful in understanding our process for review of safety concerns. The NRC plans no further action on this matter.
