This Federal Aviation Administration Skywatch incident report, part of a 2023 Department of Transportation release, records a UAP report made on August 16, 2023. American Airlines flight AAL1397, a Boeing 737 flying from Miami to Kansas City at FL340, reported two bright lights near Huntsville, about 60 miles north of Birmingham. The crew said the lights resembled two aircraft refueling far above them, circling at very high altitude and blinking on and off. Other aircraft, Birmingham Tower and Atlanta Center reported the same lights.

The unknown phenomenon was described as two bright lights 60 miles N of BHM circling at a very high altitude. The lights would stay on for a few minutes and then disappear. Multiple aircraft and facilities are reporting the same description of lights in the general area. NKS2866, Birmingham Tower personnel, and reports from aircraft in Atlanta Center's airspace.
