This Federal Aviation Administration record, part of a 2023 Department of Transportation release, logs an unidentified aerial phenomenon report from 2 February 2023. American Airlines flight AAL883, a Boeing 737-800 flying from Chicago O'Hare to Phoenix, reported a large balloon off its right side. The crew was northbound at FL340, 13 nautical miles west of STJ, and put the balloon at about FL500 or higher. Kansas City Center took the report, and the case is marked closed.
